Brodie Schmidt

Fire Policy Advisor

Brodie Schmidt is a consultant working alongside ILI as a fire policy advisor. Originally from Ontario and now living in Newfoundland and Labrador, she brings a longstanding personal and professional interest in the relationships between people, land, and fire.  

Raised by firefighters, fire has been a steady thread throughout Brodie’s life. She completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Guelph, including a Master’s degree in Geography focused on fire governance. Her professional experience spans conservation research, knowledge mobilization, and environmental consulting, including work with Wildlife Conservation Society Canada, Collective for Parks, Conservation, Innovation and Leadership, the Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership, as well as serving as Operations Manager for an Indigenous-owned environmental consulting firm.  

As a non-Indigenous researcher and consultant, Brodie understands her role as one of support. She is particularly interested in supporting Indigenous-led fire stewardship through research and policy, and in advancing governance systems that recognize Indigenous rights, responsibilities, knowledge, and leadership in relation to fire and land.  

Outside of work, she enjoys hiking and beachcombing with her dog, being out on the water, and photography.
