Jean-Philippe L. Messier is the founder and executive director of the Manicouagan-Uapishka UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (RMBMU), involved at all levels of the designation and evaluation process since 2003. Through his leadership, RMBMU implemented social enterprise through strategic planning advisory services, as well as the Uapishka Research Station, in association with Pessamit Innu Community, a unique partnership to foster science and First Nations’ capacity building along with contemporary land use. Jean-Philippe works closely with First Nations and the private sector, different levels of government, academia, and NGOs, among others.

After a 5-week canoe expedition from Matimekush to Kanjiqsualujjuaq, he co-founded the Mushuau-nipi Corporation, aiming towards intercultural bridging on the land with First Nations, on the basis of common social and environmental issues.

As past chair of the Canadian Association of Biosphere Reserves (CBRA) (for six years) and current leader of the Nordic network of biosphere reserves (NordMAB), Mr. Messier has frequently represented UNESCO’s program, his region and his country internationally.

In 2014, the Quebec government awarded him for achievements recognized beyond its borders (Alphonse et Dorimène Desjardins Award), given to one individual every two years.
