Ottawa: May 19, 2022: Indigenous Leadership Initiative’s Deputy Director Dahti Tsetso had an opportunity to meet with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at Rotary Centennial Park in Yellowknife.

“It was an honour to talk about Indigenous-led approaches to conservation with His Royal Highness and share how Indigenous Guardians programs are helping address climate change and care for lands and waters across the country,” said Tsetso.

“His Royal Highness was interested in the role culture plays in Indigenous stewardship and the way knowledge is passed on through generations. This is an essential part of what makes Indigenous-led conservation so successful. Our relationship with the land is at the heart of our culture, language, and law. This enables us to make better decisions to take care of the future.

“We appreciate this chance to shine an international spotlight on the amazing work Indigenous Nations are doing to sustain lands that matter to the health of our communities and the planet.”

On Wednesday, ILI Director Valérie Courtois and the Honourable Ethel Blondin-Andrew attended the Governor General Mary Simon’s reception welcoming the Royal Highnesses to Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

“It was a pleasure to speak with Prince Charles and the Governor General about the leadership of Indigenous Nations in caring for lands and waters,” said Courtois. “It seems appropriate that His Royal Highness heard about Indigenous-led conservation in Ottawa and Yellowknife, because Indigenous Nations are helping address climate change and strengthen communities across Canada.”
